Meningococcal (ACWY)
Preventing meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning) caused by groups A, C, W135 and Y meningococcal bacteria. There are two brands of the meningitis ACWY vaccine available, Nimenrix and Menveo.
The MenACWY vaccine has recommended only for people at increased risk of meningococcal disease, including people (adults and children) for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims; and for travellers to countries with high rates of meningococcal disease, including parts of Africa and Latin America.
All travellers to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj or Umrah pilgrimages are required to show proof of vaccination (meningitis ACWY certificate).
Why this PGD?
If travelling to a high-risk area, you should be vaccinated against meningococcal meningitis with an ACWY vaccine. This is a single injection that should be given two to three weeks before you travel.
